Service Description
"Mysore style" got its name from Mysore, India, where Pattabhi Jois first began teaching the Ashtanga method to students. Unlike a led class, where the teacher leads an entire class through the sequence as a group, in Mysore style classes, each student learns the sequence from the teacher at a pace appropriate to them. The teacher works one-on-one with each student so they learn the proper approach to each posture and progress through the practice in a safe and individualized manner. This is the best place for beginners to start their journey into Ashtanga yoga, as more time is available to work in each posture and learn personalized modifications where appropriate. Students build a strong, safe, confident practice they can take with them anywhere. Ashtanga is a traditional style of yoga developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the mid-twentieth century. Named after the eight limbs of yoga as laid out by Patanjali (asta ('eight') + anga ('limb')), Ashtanga yoga incorporates the essence of each of those limbs in one dynamic, flowing sequence of postures. This asana sequence is inextricably linked to deep, controlled breath, and is performed in the same order each time, allowing students to learn the breath and asana sequence by heart. This is a rejuvenating practice, offering practitioners the ability to develop strength, flexibility, mental focus, tenacity, inner calm, and patience.
